Its fun, although slightly narcissistic () to see what comes up.

I was reminded of this yesterday, when talking to some people on a conference call who had taken the liberty of Googling me in order to get some background before we spoke for the first time...

I'm quite lucky, in that even though I don't use my full name on this blog (which would probably give me a better hit rate), I have a bit of a web presence owing to a few articles I've written and having been interviewed for a couple of journals in my particular field of work, so generally speaking I come out as number 2 in any Google search for my name.  Yey for me for being Number 2

The obvious follow up question is, 'Who's Number one then?'   And the rather stark answer is that its a dead guy

Yes, bizzare I know, but its true - I actually have a famous namesake who unfortunately died last year, so you have to trawl quite a long way down the list of hits to actually get to a reference to me.  The other Col was a record producer, working mainly in the '80s with such artists as Duran Duran, Iggy Pop, Howard Jones etc.

A few years ago, I took a call from a journalist in the States asking if they could fly me to New York to do an interview with Rolling Stone magazine - and because I was a bit startled by the request, I came clean and admitted that I was the other me, and missed out on what could have been an excellent blagging opportunity.  That was the first and last time that any such identity confusion ever happened.  Ah well.
